World-Renowned Vienna Boys Choir to Perform at the Wayne Theatre on March 2, 2026

Waynesboro, The historic Wayne Theatre will proudly welcome the Vienna Boys Choir for a rare and unforgettable performance on March 2, 2026, at 7:00 pm. Audiences will experience the pure, crystalline sound of one of the most celebrated choral ensembles in the world, known for a tradition that spans more than five centuries.

The Vienna Boys Choir traces its origins to 1498, when Emperor Maximilian I moved his court to Vienna and founded the Chapel Imperial, establishing the ensemble that would become the modern Vienna Boys Choir. Over the centuries, the court attracted renowned composers and musicians, including Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Anton Bruckner. Joseph Haydn, Michael Haydn, and Franz Schubert were themselves choirboys, contributing to a legacy that continues to shape the Choir’s distinguished sound.

Today the Vienna Boys Choir is a private, non-profit organization that relies on sponsorship and donations. The Choir’s campus includes a primary school, junior high, and senior high school. Three hundred students between the ages of six and nineteen receive a comprehensive education and individual voice training, with the Choir welcoming young singers from all backgrounds.

The 100 choristers between the ages of nine and fourteen are divided into four touring choirs. Together they perform approximately 300 concerts each year for nearly half a million people around the globe. Since 1924, the Choir has completed more than 1000 tours across 100 countries, totaling an extraordinary 29,000 performances. Their work includes regular Sunday services in Vienna’s Imperial Chapel alongside members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the State Opera Chorus, as well as appearances with leading orchestras under the direction of esteemed conductors. Recent highlights include the Salzburg Festival and the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Concert.

The Vienna Boys Choir’s singing tradition is recognized by UNESCO as part of Austria’s intangible cultural heritage. Professor Gerald Wirth, a former choirboy, serves as Artistic Director of the entire campus and continues to guide the ensemble with dedication and vision.

The Wayne Theatre invites the community to experience this world-class performance and witness a choral tradition that has inspired audiences for more than 500 years.
